I love the German language more than anything else, but so delighted was I to see them fall at the tenth hour, I devoted half of my radio show last night to German songs.

We wallowed in Can, Kraftwerk, Hildegard Knef etc etc. And Nena’s punky, spangly hit is one great tune that sounds even better in the German language. Here it is, just to remind you what a great track this is.

So, Germany, this is for you.

I’m not adverse to football but like most girls, I don’t get the drop everything, we must watch this match or die of shame/pain/no gain etc. Talk about the passion and I’ll switch off. I still, when not fully concentrating, refer to this tournament as ‘Euro 96′, because this was probably the last time I gave a monkey’s about England in a football match. England aside, I can’t resist the closing stages of a major tournament so last night myself and a sport neutral Mr Norman, tuned in.

Last night was an everything that’s so bloody frustrating, bone-crushingly dull and yet surprisingly good, that’s why people bother with it after all, cocktail of randomness. I’d nipped out to top up my drink when Turkey clawed back and so I missed the compensation for sitting through the rest of the soporific non-spectacle.

Now, this is why I can’t stand football. It’s unbelievably inane for the most part, but it has it’s moments of magic too. It’s just I’m normally in the loo/making tea/turning my head at a 180 degree angle at the time.

Still, to be fair to last night, I love a good shoot-out and an underdog victory.

From all accounts with a weak France, Germany have shone. I’m fascinated by Germany and the language but after having spent years studying their art, history, literature, film etc I could still never bring myself to support them in any sporting event at any time in my life. (Ever).

Fingers crossed for Turkey then.
